Daily Photo: Please Stop, I Can’t Stand the Cuteness

Bella imparts some “older kitty” wisdom to Smokie.

Anyone who has ever fostered kittens knows that you don’t get much done aside from playing with them and watching them because they are so cute. He so needed an older cat to take care of him, and Bella loves other cats. These two are such good buddies, and so cute together I can hardly take a breath before they are doing something else I need to photograph. Just before this she was bathing him, and just after this a BIRD landed in the tree outside and started eating the wild grapes. More on that another time, but for now, it’s truly a beautiful day!

A Sure Sign of Autumn, 2013

An empty desk downstairs and all five cats on my bed in the sun,

No, it’s not migrating birds or leaves turning color or the first chill nights when I have to close all the windows. It’s when I’m working at my desk in my office downstairs and realize I am completely alone. There are no cats at all on my desk.

I tiptoe upstairs and turn the corner on the landing to look in my bedroom, filling with sun through the window, and I find what my cats have deserted me for. You know how it is when you see your cats happy and warm. I smile, add a few more photos of them to the pile of photos I already have from years gone by, and go back to work. It’s tradition—even before they were all related the bed on a sunny autumn or winter afternoon was always the place to nap. Now until spring, this is where I can find them on sunny days. Yes, autumn is truly here. For now, no more torture by cuteness.

From the top, clockwise, it’s Mr. Sunshine, Bean and Mewsette, Giuseppe and Mimi.

That’s a Good Nip, 2012

Mimi enjoyed a little nip in the sun this morning, then a little more, and a little more after that. Here she is rubbing her face all over the one with the bright pink feather that seems to have been revived lately.

Mimi especially looks good with bright pink.

The Lesson of the Paws and Tails, 2011

Paws and Tails for a Reason

Well, if I have to spend a whole nice Saturday inside at least I’m in good company. Mimi and Mewsette stretched out on my desk and draped appendages over the keyboard. I tried to move their legs and tails but they only ended up back where they started, so I ended up typing between them for a while. I’ve been typing for many years, this was just another test to see how well I know my keyboard. Honestly, many of the letters and punctuation are worn off, so it doesn’t really matter anyway!

But I think Mimi and Mewsette had a message for me: “It’s a nice Saturday, you should stop work and go do something else.” Perhaps it’s just my regret speaking—Cookie and I were out in the wet grass this morning photographing leftover raindrops, and I really did try to get back out there, but there was just too much to do today.

It’s one of the reasons I let my cats walk all over my desk, so that they will interrupt me and make me take little breaks, but I guess I don’t always get the big message. Thanks for trying girls. I’ll listen next time!

I Really Do Fit in This Box, 2010

I Really Do Fit in This Box

Not even little Mimi fits in the envelopes box I keep at my desk for catching small items like disks and memo pads. And she can’t even be very comfortable partially balanced on the edge and on three paws down inside, but she is determined. I don’t mind because otherwise she wants to sleep on the papers I’m working with, and will not take “no” for an answer.

Mimi is drawn to any container that might hold her, be it drawer, cupboard, basket or box, she has to try it on for size. I have to be careful to watch for her before I close anything! I’m accustomed to this vigilance with kittens, and even though I’ve had others interested in boxes and bags and such Mimi is the first adult cat I’ve lived with who so insistently needs to get inside every container as if she’s drawn in by a magnet. But then, she’s only 6.5 lbs., and she’s really a kitten at heart, living out her kittenhood now after bearing so many litters.
