Daily Photo: Our Daily Bread
Little Smokie does whatever the ninjas tell him to do because they are usually right, but he’s not so sure Bean was serious when he told Smokie he should taste the flour!
It was another Saturday in the kitchen, and bread and soup day. Another dark, rainy, sleety cold Saturday, but a warm and good-smelling kitchen is a happy place for all of us. Despite what you see here, I do try to keep them out of my bread dough and all else I’m making, but when I turn around to tend to the soup, this is what happens.
I started the soup and vegetable stock simmering early and the kitchen is already warm and humid, and then I’ve turned on the oven to preheat and provide more heat to rise the bread dough I’ll be making soon. The top of the cabinet is a prime spot to nap in the warmth from the stove and catch the action and get the human’s attention. I have to convince these three to move so that I can set up my ingredients and make my bread dough…kind of wishing for more counter space.
At the top, Smokie decided to taste the flour as I assembled ingredients!
Below, the bread dough mixed and ready to knead, I set up my kneading board and turn to stir the soup. Mimi tells me I’m not taking her nice warm spot. We have a little discussion about this as I kind of like that warm spot myself as I stand and knead the bread, the heat from the oven and soup pots on my back.
But ultimately Mimi wins, and gives me a look that puts me in my place–at the other end of the cabinet.
Mimi and Smokie demonstrate the concept of “resting” for the bread dough, which is all kneaded and resting before I place it in the pans to rise. AT least no drafts will be able to get to the dough with the two of them there.
While the bread dough rises and the soup cooks, the kitchen is the place to be–all seven are there, but only five on the cabinet. Smokie cuddles with napping Mimi and Giuseppe and Mr. Sunshine bathe each other…
…leaving Bean to monitor the bread dough rising. Watching bread dough rise is a very specialized activity best undertaken by felines.
After all that work they were all exhausted and everyone had a really, really good bath and nap on the cabinet while I ate my bread and had a bowl of soup…standing up.
