Daily Photo: Monday Morning Supervisory Team
Monday’s feline snoopervisor TEAM. Apparently Mondays are a little difficult for keeping me focused on task. Especially when there are two baskets of housepanthers observing my every move.
How do I ever get anything done?
Below, sometimes Mewsette joins Mimi and me outdoors but this morning she wasn’t at all sure about heading for the steps, even if Mimi was leading the way. I first posted both of these photos on Instagram, sorry my regular readers don’t see them until days later!

Watching, 2016
Bella sits quietly at the front door, watching whatever is out there. At this moment it was a big fat robin on the sidewalk, flipping over leaves and debris to get to the tasty bugs underneath. Apparently it was a good performance because Bella did not move for whole minutes.
This was not taken at the same time, but it’s what Bella looks like from the outside when she watches out the door. Hard to believe the weather variations on this date through the years!

So it’s drizzling. Mimi hasn’t been outside for two really nice days, she’ll take what she can get. Look at that happy tail! A little drizzle never did a kitty any harm, just made her furs and mine a little extra frizzy. March 13

Sunworshipper, 2015
I took way too many photos of Smokie in the sun here not to use a few different ones. Here I was trying to capture all the shadows splayed on the top of the wardrobe from the lace curtain, Smokie’s profile and the window, but keep the focus on Smokie’s profile. I also angled it to keep the palette limited in golds and sable, though there’s a bit of green reflected in there too. Smokie is learning to be a good model through my many experiments!

Looking for Spring, 2014
No one would notice a black cat in the middle of all this green and tan, right? Mimi is sure no one and nothing can spot her, holding completely still on this branch. Except that fool with the black thing stuck to her face who follows Mimi everywhere.
What Mimi is standing on is actually the trunk of the tree to which her favorite branch is attached. In 2010 the tree was weighed down by ice and snow, and as the snow melted and spring arrived it slowly…laid down, right there in the woodland garden. The tree is my favorite mulberry, the one that grows the berries big and purple as blackberries and has been the source of much jelly and juice. Mimi’s branch is like a prop, as if the tree is holding itself partially upright with one hand on the ground. You can see it curving away and downward right by Mimi’s tail in the photo above. So Mimi runs up the tree’s arm and ends up on the trunk. And then…something rustled on the little hill up to the neighbor’s yard, under the pine trees, right at Mimi’s eye level…
The green branches are not part of the mulberry, but are from the American hemlock I planted there years ago, a native species that grows well on north-facing slopes and under taller tree cover, much like the woodland garden in my back yard.
I’m sure to have more photos of Mimi on the tree—she’s been enjoying the view from there each day. She gets a little abstract with her camouflage as well.

Hamlet and Ophelia
We are slowly making progress, but it’s not as fast as the others have been. I started two flower essences three weeks ago and it’s made a huge difference. I can pet the two of them all day long in their room, and sometimes when they are out, though when they are out in the upstairs they are just as likely to dodge me. Ophelia was friendly and sweet in the room, but Hamlet wanted no parts of being touched. Now he greets me at the door and asks for pets. But they love the bedroom, the bed, and the window.

Four fosters on the bed
All four fosters together, Hamlet on the windowsill, Basil by the pillows, Bella on the bed, Ophelia at the foot. It was a bit much for the two younger ones but we’ll try again tomorrow.
Attention to De-tail

Attention to de-tails. Looks like they’ve agreed on something, or they are spelling something in secret code.
The Decision
Apparently this is what the tails had agreed upon, a nice morning nap cuddled in the kitchen.

Wordless Wednesday: Same Day, Different Stories, 2015
Bella and Jelly Bean were having a parallel experience this afternoon on the wardrobe at the top of the stairs. I’m sure their stories of their experiences would be so different one would think the were in a different time and place as Bella focused on the squirrel in the pussy willow, and the chickadee, and the cardinal, and the squirrel, and the squirrel, while Jelly Bean entertained himself with a nap on the sun-warmed wood of the cabinet. Just two existentialist kitties enjoying their day.

I spent time in the studio today working on my new projects for April. I couldn’t help but share my supervisors’ activities as well. Jelly Bean came to sit on the table as I was laying out my frames with notes and preparing my paints. He suddenly found himself completely surrounded! He was afraid I might have notes to paint him too!
After he escaped that close call, Mimi joined me to supervise, taking some time to multi-task and clean her toes.
Then I had a brief time of aloneness when I could actually get a little bit of work done before…someone let the kids in—I didn’t post this on on FB, yet, I just took it a few minutes ago, Smokie and Bella on a walk-through for quality control. So young and so talented!
What are we supposed to be doing Bella?

Looking for Spring, 2014
Mimi and I went out into the back yard to look for the spring that arrived today.
Mimi sat on the deck rail and surveyed our yard for quite some time, looking for signs of spring, but only found some wan sunshine.
We looked in the garden.
I’d left all the plants standing for the animals to nibble through the winter and brush for cover to find protection, and tomato stakes and plant cages for birds to land on when the world is covered in snow and ice. Mimi rubbed her face on everything, and we noticed that our bunny, Hester, liberally fertilized our garden. Usually I would have set up my cold frame and planted lettuce, and planted peas by the fence and potato sets in the sunniest bed by now, but the ground temperature is too cold, and in many places it’s still frozen. I hope this will take care of some of the insects who’ve been able to overwinter with our recent mild winters.
We looked in the compost pile.
I don’t have a bin for compost at the moment—that was crushed when the neighbor’s tree came down last May, and it’s a project for this spring. But the pile is alive with not only good soil bacteria but also little critters who appreciate the heat it generates and the occasional tasty snack they find. My brush piles for wildlife also line the fence, stacks of twigs and branches birds and little bits can climb through covered over by a heavy, waterproof covering of last year’s dry leaves. Mimi and I held very still and quiet to hear rustles and peeps and squeaks and whispers coming from all along the fence, yet not one thing moved.
Buddy yelled at us the whole time we were outside.

Mimi told him to get out of her tree.
I think she also told him to watch his step or he’d be cat food.
We did find Vernal Equinox, but she is very tired from her journey and will rest a while under a blanket of leaves.
