Daily Photo: Kitten Time

two cats
Lunchtime?

“Okay, we trashed the room and played with everything, including all of your slippers and your sweater and all the toys. Can we have lunch now?”

It’s just a little room but Bert and Ernie make the best of it. I’m just here to clean up after cats.

I’ll confess I kind of instigated this. The sun was bright and the light so wonderful in there, and I’ve been wanting to get some lovely good photos of them doing more than laying around in the tub. I made them play with me! Not that they minded. They are good little models, just wait until you see the photos!

This photo is kind of reminiscent of a sketch I did from when Smokie and Bella were staying in there, “The Kitten Room”.

Mimi takes advantage of the snow light to give her toes a good cleaning.

I meant to share this one with yesterday’s Wordless Wednesday of Bella cleaning her toes!

That Kitty in the Mirror, 2014
black cat looking in mirror
Giuseppe carefully studies the reflection in the mirror.

Giuseppe looks out the window…in the mirror, and perhaps wonders about the kitty he sees there. Probably he sees a reflection of Fatso the squirrel on the nieghbor’s roof, but I did catch him admiring himself before I got my camera.

Really, it’s said that recognizing one’s self is a sign of intelligence and people debate whether animals truly can. I see the expression in my cats’ eyes and it’s definitely one of recognition, and I presume they recognize themselves. The Five all resemble each other but before these close relations my cats were all quite different, tabbies and torbies and torties and white and gray and spotted and long-haired and short-haired, yet I still saw the same sense of recognition in their expressions. And in my favorite photo of Jelly Bean I am absolutely certain he is admiring himself!

Later, he watches a stinkbug slowly traverse the bathroom ceiling, making for an interesting composition. Looks like two more for the 2014 version of Compositions in Black and Green.

Just a bit of Giuseppe.

Pensive Kelly, 2012
tortoiseshell cat at window
Kelly ponders things by her favorite window.

Kelly’s tiny little face rests in deep thought as she sits in front of her favorite window on a winter afternoon, those vivid green eyes full of mystery.

I always associate this window with Kelly, even though she also spends time on the bathroom windowsill and the casement at the top of the stairs, and this year decided to visit my studio as I was working in there.

But since she began mingling with the house she’s been devoted to this side window with the bird feeders right outside and the lilacs where the birds perch and the butterflies visit, not far from the corner where I’ve been sitting to work for 15 years. She was such an inspiration at this side window that I’ve done two pieces of artwork featuring her at her post.

There’s Kelly at her morning bath, a linoleum block print I designed and first printed in 1998.

Kelly gives herself a complete bath every morning after breakfast on the table in front of the window in my studio, her every move full of purpose and industry. I always found Kelly’s Morning Bath very inspiring.

And you’re familiar with Winter Window.

Cookie Has a Snow Cone, 2012
tortie cat eating snow
Cookie has a snow cone!

Cookie enjoys a bit of snow from the top of the round pot at the foot of our deck steps. A snow cone!

The temperature finally rose above freezing so Cookie and I went outside in the sun. In her condition, she can’t regulate her body temperature so well and I’m always a little concerned for her little paws, and the rest of her as well.

She’s still a little shaky but she can make it up and down steps, slowly. I’m impressed that her tongue is nice and pink! But we had a nice visit to the yard and it really energized her.
