Daily Photo: Handsome Hamlet

Handsome Hamlet enjoys the sun on his fur and gets a look at the bird and squirrel activity from the second floor bathroom window. He is so handsome I almost can’t stand it.

Below, he lounges on the floor at the top of the steps. He kept moving so it was difficult to catch a clear photo but he looked so lush and relaxed there on the floor with that big tail that I couldn’t resist. He is more social and friendly each day.

Hamlet and Ophelia at Play

Hamlet and Ophelia have been moving along slowly with socialization, but just when I think we’ve made progress something comes up that frightens them. Over the weekend I had the windows open and while they loved it like the rest of us, street noises frightened them and they ran when cars went past. Then later neighbors were very noisily playing football in the yard next to ours and Ophelia tried to leap out of the bathroom when I opened the door to give them dinner and Hamlet was in hiding again in the back of the cubby by the tub. I closed the window and talked to them then played a little bit and they were fine. I have been thinking for the past couple of months they are less former feral than traumatized by something that happened at some point. I’m working with a number of toys and treats and lavender flower cushions and flower essences as well, and may get a calming collar for each of them to see if that helps.

I’ve also been letting them out individually for a period of time. Ophelia was frightened at first without her brother, but yesterday Basil realized that only one of the fosters was out in the upstairs and that worked much better for him. He engaged Ophelia in a game of tag that involved him running from the landing into the bedroom while Ophelia followed along on the bed, then hid behind the bed post and watched Basil. Eventually, they touched noses briefly each time, then started again. It was very cute.

Later I lured her into the studio and gave her a strip of wax paper backing to double-stick tape and she took it and ran off with it to add it to her stash under the chair in the bedroom. Ophelia is getting easier to handle outside the room, but Hamlet is just not ready for trust outside of his room just yet.

I was happy to see him curled up in the middle of the bed, though, that’s a first for him. He loves to play and I can get them both to chase the strip of rainbow fabric or sisal rope—until one of the regulars joins in and they are frightened by too many other cats, and sometimes even by their play. I rolled up a ball of kraft paper for them to play with, and they love these things, the two of them could play all day with one, but Jelly Bean wanted to join in and ended up playing all by himself. Later Hamlet was busy watching all the action in the maple tree out front and seemed pretty relaxed and I managed to at least touch him.

A chocolate kitty? No filters, Jelly Bean is really this chocolate in sunlight. In deep contemplation, apparently. Happy Easter to all who celebrate!

“Did I miss the Easter Bunny? I wanted to play with him!” Basil is very disappointed! Can’t pass up an opportunity for a good cat-in-a-yellow-basket photo.

Handsome, 2015
Smokie's looking fine.
Smokie’s looking fine.

Smokie has been learning to pose too. My, doesn’t he know what to do with his tail? And those amber eyes! I just went into my bedroom to get a frame I have stored in there but Smokie was just irresistible on the bed.

I thought I’d gotten the photo for the day and then…

Oh, I'm just so perfect!
Oh, I’m just so perfect!

That’s it Smokie, just show off all that fur! And yes, the belly is pettable. As long as I don’t attack the belleh like I want to he loves belly rubs and purrs and rolls around and wants kisses. What a baby!

Oh, okay, I’ll let you see my white spot!

Okay, you can see my white spot.

When he relaxes he opens his mouth a bit and lets the tip of his tongue show. That’s how I know he’s okay with it.

He always shows his tongue when he's relaxed and feeling affectionate.

Then later I found him cuddling with one of his fur brothers. This time it was Mr. Sunshine, who had tried to invade Smokie’s photo shoot. Sweet.

Finally he settles with his fur brother, Mr. Sunshine this time.

On Facebook this week…

I did have another of those weeks (as if you didn’t notice I posted everything late!) and forgot to share photos from Facebook!

From Monday…

Smokie's enjoying Monday!

Smokie isn’t sure what the big fuss is about Monday. It’s just the same as any other day for him–lie around in the sun and look doubly irresistible reflected in an antique mirror. Seems pretty easy!

From Tuesday…

Sleeping on the job! As I toiled all afternoon in my studio my erstwhile supervisors were getting their beauty sleep in the next room. Guess they got literally tired of hearing me say “get down” and “don’t touch that, please”.

From Wednesday…

The important job of greeting guests on many levels! We had a visit from Margo Cicci Wisniewski this morning!

Okay, I admit it may appear as if a cat lady lives here–piles of cat litter, cat food, cat trap, cat garden flags, cat figurines, cats in the door and windows…. I’m a drop off for the goods. Margo delivered a small portion of the cat food and litter that has been generously donated so we can distribute from here to other rescuers who can use it and also distribute further. This will feed and litter fosters, feral and community cats and people in need. Thanks to Fix Ur Cat, Western PA Humane Society, Beaver County Humane Society and others who donated including Margo and Deana Ann Boggs who bought out clearances at pet stores.
