Daily Photo: Got That Brother Trained

two black cats
I’ve got that brother well-trained.

Mewsette purrs and looks quite pleased with herself as Mr. Sunshine diligently cleans behind her ears. That brother learned well how to treat his sister.

What a beautiful morning! Is this really August?

Basil is Assigned a Ninja-in-Training

Basil has been assigned his first ninja-in-training. Simon is doing well but needs quite a bit of supervision, as Bella and Giuseppe join in the training session. Giuseppe lets Basil know he’s proud of his student. It’s just short of a year since Basil came here, and he was smaller than Simon when Giuseppe first began his ninja training.

What other photos did I feature around this date?

Kitchen Snoopervisors, 2013

Giuseppe and Mewsette watch me at the sink.

I have no idea why they were watching me so intently at the sink, but I do know why Giuseppe looks so unhappy—he wants to cuddle and have a nap, but Mewsette won’t pay any attention to him.

I’m not sure what I was doing, but I know it didn’t have anything to do with food, I guess I was just the most interesting thing happening at the moment so they watched me. Pitiful. I think a nap would have been more exciting.

And that was the solution for Giuseppe, but not for the steadfast Mewsette, who kept her eyes on me for as long as I was at the sink. Apparently Giuseppe didn’t believe I needed two cats worth of supervision, only one would do. With Mewsette’s intent vigilance, I would not have dared step out of line.

Contemplating Other Things, 2012

Contemplating other things.

Giuseppe is intent on something that is running back and forth outside the basement door, likely a chipmunk by the little shadow I see passing by in the light under the door. Mewsette, however, has been contemplating the garden all morning along with me, and has now decided to get some sun on her back as she considers what is happening indoors.

Kitties have such complicated lives.

When it comes to the details in some of these photos, I love to present them in monochrome. This particular black and white has a yellow filter to enrich the shadows and open up the highlights; they just look a little dull sometimes when they are on the computer compared to when they are a print. The light shining through them instead of on them seems to wash them out.

Ready for Work?, 2011

Tortie Girls reporting for work.

My studio supervisors arrive at work before me! I’m working on starting the day in my studio when my eyes are rested and I have daylight to work with instead of ending it there and working too late into the night.

My tortie girls agree! They’ve been staying up all night with me for more years than they want to remember—after all, they have to supervise me or how could I get any artwork done? The most important role they serve is sleeping on my lap or next to my feet so that I need to stay put and therefore get work done. One would never get up or move while a cat is sleeping.

The younger ones have something to learn from keeping me under control, perhaps someday one of them will show some potential.

Cookie has had a lifelong role in what I do, and this will clarify what she does: I Will Never Get to Retire.

Gambit and Tabatha, 2010

Gambit and Tabatha nap in the shade.

I stopped at the Agway yesterday and had the pleasure of visiting with two of the cats in their permanent collection as well as the last two kittens to be adopted.

Gambit and Tabatha probably know me as the lady who always chases them with a camera. Here they are in a cool spot on the concrete under the racks that hold plants for sale.

They have a total of three cats in residence, and I often see Gambit and Tabatha together while the other cat was one of the feral mothers they had taken in and had spayed, but who has never fully integrated into the group. I’ll get a photo of her some time while she’s out in the warehouse.
