Daily Photo: Friday Ninja Lesson, Afternoon Meditative Postures

Afternoon Meditation

In my studio I suddenly realized the house was very quiet. No kitten paws were thundering up and down the stairs and skidding around on the floors, the chirping bird toy was silent, and not a cat was moving. I was actually worried that something had happened to the littles as they usually settled in whatever room I was in when they took their occasional breaks from ninja training. Perhaps someone had opened the door and let out everyone but Mimi, sleeping on my lap.

Mimi sensed my concern and slight tensing as I considered awakening her to get up and go look, and as she always does got up and stretched and stepped one paw onto my desk before I even asked her if we could move.

One step out the studio door onto the landing and I found the reason for the silence. Giuseppe-sensei was instructing his students in the proper method of afternoon rest and meditative postures and all were fully engaged. The students were apparently performing exceptionally well at basic positioning because Giuseppe demonstrated the compact hind leg/front leg stretch-curl with head tuck, ending with the head turn and paw over the face. Young ninjas studied his technique. No one paid attention to me. They were not learning to be little humans.

Open Your Eyes, 2013

Jelly Bean and Mewsette attempt to ignore me.

“Here she is with that black box thing again. We can’t even get a little nap in.”

“Let’s try to ignore her, maybe she’ll go away.”

“She usually doesn’t stop no matter what we do.”

“She’s circling us now.”

“Next she’ll be waving her hands and talking to us as if we don’t notice her.”

“What do you suppose she’s waiting for us to do?”

“She probably wants us to look at her.”

“Do you suppose we should?”

“She did put this box here for us.”

“And we have been sleeping in it all day.”

“We won’t get any peace unless we do.”

“Let’s get it over with.”

Mewsette Wants a Cracker, 2012

Mewsette chooses the cracker that is just right for her.

Mewsette was nowhere to be seen when I set the package of crackers on the cabinet and turned to get the peanut butter. I turned around and found Mewsette diligently choosing the cracker she wanted and delicately picking it up in her sharp and ferocious teeth.

“You weren’t eating it,” she said, “and it was getting stale with the package open. Besides, what would you do with it now after I’ve licked it a few times and have it in my teeth?”

“So what are you going to do about it?”

She has a point there. I just wish she’d clean up her crumbs. She loves crunchy snacks.

Four At the Door, 2011

Mewsette, Mimi, Mr. Sunshine and Giuseppe.

“Let me at him!”

“Sshhh! He’s right there. Right there!”

“He doesn’t care if we hear him!”

“If I could just get out this door.”

“I get so tired of watching him all over the deck—like he owns it!”

They’re watching Fatso, the squirrel, make a fool of himself trying to get to the feeder hanging off the edge of the deck. The feeder is actually right across from the door, but Fatso gets his exercise starting on the deck rail on the side of the house and swinging up and down the chains for my porch swing and hanging on my plants. Oh, he gives the kids a good workout as they watch.

Wish the lighting was a little better in some areas…
