Cats for Adoption: Sweet Scarlett is Ready for a Home
Sweet and petite Scarlett is ready for adoption at the Western Pennsylvania Humane Society! I featured Scarlett two weeks ago when I brought her here for a photo opportunity prior to surrendering her to the Western Pennsylvania Humane Society through our rescue organization, the Homeless Cat Management Team. She was the kitty who, along with Charm, had been abandoned last winter but later taken in by the neighbor who was also caring for Charm.
Everyone’s consensus is that Scarlett is totally sweet! Even after her abandonment and rescue and shuffling around she was a princess for her photos. Then she was a calm and quiet car passenger and a patient visitor to the shelter, and was handled by total strangers with complete trust.
She was spayed and given all her shots, and reports after she’d been in the shelter for a few days were that she was a favorite kitty! The person I contacted about her told me, “Scarlett is one of my favorites! She so sweet and snuggley and lovey! Not to mention that cute little round head, my absolute favorite and she loves cheek and belly rubs!” And as she moved through the process I kept hearing how everyone loved her and how sweet she was.
Scarlett is about four years old, though we’d originally thought she was older. That’s the toll it takes on a cat who is not spayed and gives birth to kittens at will and then is abandoned outdoors in midwinter.
Scarlett’s story is so similar to Mimi’s. Mimi was about four years old when she came to me after similar circumstances, unspayed, six litters of kittens, and Scarlett is also a petite, sweet, quiet round-faced little black kitty too, weighing in at about eight pounds to Mimi’s seven plus a few ounces or so.
Comparing the two, I am always surprised that if any cats had a reason to be angry, distrustful, or even unpredictable, it’s these former street moms, and yet Mimi has never been anything but loving, friendly and affectionate, Scarlett has been so far, and Charm is as well. Perhaps that’s part of what helped them survive in difficult circumstances.

Scarlett is at the Western Pennsylvania Humane Society in Pittsburgh, PA. Her ID number is A196949. Her description at the shelter is:
“I am a sassy feline who is looking to swagger her way into your heart! Unfortunately my humans had to give me up, because they just had too many other cats, so now I’m looking for my forever family! I enjoy my naps, but pampering is the true way to my heart. So bring on the petting and cuddles! I especially love to mush my face directly into your palm while you stroke me. I am said to be friendly with other cats, and have exceptional litterbox habits! If you have any animal friends in the home, please ask how we should be introduced. I am a delightful dame looking for love, is that with you? Please come down to the shelter and meet me today! I can’t wait to see you!”

I’ll be keeping an eye on her progress, and visiting her when I go there for any other pick ups or surrenders.
Scarlett’s original story
Another cat rescuer who works in an office building on the other side of my town messaged me a few months ago about cats that had been abandoned. Many of the people who work there are cat lovers and cat owners already and they maintain a feeding station and outdoor shelters for stray and feral cats in the neighborhood and have had several altered who visit the station. When one of them saw the resident put the three cats on his porch, get in his car and drive away, never to return, they started looking for the cats and trying to figure how to bring them in when no one had room for a foster.
Worst of all, the three cats were apparently unspayed females, and only two were brought in by a neighbor, though she already had two cats and really isn’t supposed to have pets at all, but in this fierce winter she couldn’t leave them outside. One of those two was Charm, who got back outside and came back ready to deliver kittens. Scarlett stayed inside.
They contacted me again when Charm was seen moving her kittens with a male cat trying to climb on her back…it really never ends for these cats when they are driven by hormones. I was ready to take Charm and her kittens, but that was when she had hidden them. I could at least help Scarlett while searching for Charm’s kittens, so I went to pick her up two weeks ago.
As a mature black cat I’m going to keep promoting her adoption. She deserves a quiet loving home after this, and who wouldn’t want a little black cat like Mimi?

Can’t adopt? Foster! Can’t foster? Donate or volunteer.
There are so many ways you can help cats who need homes and care. You may not have room to adopt another cat, but can foster a cat or kitten for a few weeks. If not that, you can volunteer at a shelter or with a rescue, or donate. You do this because you love your cat, and by doing so you help all cats. No matter which of these actions you take, you help to save a life, and make life better for all cats.
- Adopt one of the cats I’ve posted here, or from any shelter or rescue near you, or from Petfinder, to open up a space for another cat to be rescued and fostered.
- Offer to foster cats or kittens for a shelter or rescue near you.
- Volunteer at a shelter or rescue.
- Find a group of volunteers who work with homeless cats and help them with their efforts.
- Donate to a shelter or rescue near you.
If you can foster kittens or adults cats to help prepare them for a forever home, please run to your nearest shelter and find a cat who needs you! Anyone can help with this effort at any level, even if all you do is donate to a shelter or rescue so they can help to pay for the food or medications needed for their foster, or the spay/neuter/veterinary care during a clinic.

Big round eyes and a sweet round head..surely someone will love her..I looked at the shelter list she is one..so many kitties..will people ever learn that they are the cause of this problem..not the cats themselves..It all makes me sick and angry and sad when I think about it Bernadette..
