Cats for Adoption: Meet Blondie, or Samwise!

You know you want to adopt me.
You know you want to adopt me.

You are about to be overloaded with sweetness! Now that Charm’s kittens are four to five weeks old and beginning to look like cats instead of little Hello Kitties—and Splash has been adopted already—it’s time to introduce the rest of the herd litter. They only sound like that when they are in a big playing binge. And because we’ve seen the girls, Splash and Zorro, plenty of times, we’re going to work on the boys this week.

Who's that?
Who’s that?

Today in a post I used a quote from The Lord of the Rings, and I love the idea of these three as little hobbits!

"It's a dangerous business, Frodo, going out your door." The three fuzzy brothers, Crayola, Higgins and Blondie, consider an adventure.
“It’s a dangerous business, Frodo, going out your door.” The three fuzzy brothers, Crayola, Higgins and Blondie, consider an adventure.

Crayola and Higgins are named for art materials, but Blondie, well, that was the first name that occurred to me because he is such a lovely light buff, and all that hair! He was very quiet at first so I thought I’d wait until I saw more purr-sonality before I gave him a better name. Really, the thing he did best was have really cute naps!

He can sleep really well.
He can sleep really well.

He would just fall down where he was and sleep.

REALLY well.
REALLY well.

He looks quite orange in the two photos above but that’s how my smartphone sees colors and it’s not accurate—he’s really quite pale. The other photos in natural sunlight are about as close as I can get.

As close as I can get to his true color.
As close as I can get to his true color.

So here’s the next name: Samwise Gamgee, one of the hobbits, Frodo’s gardener and best buddy on the journey. I chose that particular hobbit because I always liked his character and I also read about where Tolkein derived the names of his characters, giving me another clue: Gamgee surgical tissue was named for surgeon Joseph Sampson Gamgee, and the stuff was so popular that it became the generic name for “cotton wool”, or what we refer to as cotton balls or cotton batting. I thought this was fitting for an excessively fuzzy champagne-colored kitten who everyone is probably going to think is a girl all his life. Read more about Sam Gamgee’s name and character here. You see, he’s already looking for places to adventure!

The faraway expression.
The faraway expression.

But I’ve caught him over the past few mornings being such a wonderfully attentive kitten, his blue eyes just turning green.

How can you resist?
How can you resist?

He did so well for his modeling session that I think he’s a natural for being a feline model! What a profile! What whiskers!

The profile view.
The profile view.

And he took to that mirror right away!

I'm just as cute as can be!
I’m just as cute as can be!

Every once in a while he has a little discharge below his eyes which you can see a bit of in some of these photos, and it almost looks like what I’m familiar seeing with Persian cats.  His fur also has that long and cottony feel, different from his siblings with longish fur, so he may have a tiny bit of Persian cat in his heritage. In any case I think he’s going to be one fuzzy cat all his life.

Where is that kitten?
Where is that kitten?

He loves being cuddled and kissed and playing on my lap. He greets me with standing on his hind paws and reaching way up my legs for me to pick him up!

Most exciting of all, I discovered on his first night here that he was a budding cardboard interpretation artist like Mewsette! Since then he’s tested the mettle of several other boxes in the room, but he is young yet. I’m sure he has a future!

A cardboard interpretation artist!
A cardboard interpretation artist!

Blondie/Samwise is listed as Samwise and is available for adoption when he’s been neutered and received his first shots through Pittsburgh CAT. If you are interested in adopting Samwise or any of Charm’s kittens please fill out an adoption application. Our adoption coordinator will review your application and let me know to call you.

. . . . . . .

We are overloaded with cute little kittens, but don’t forget the older kittens and adults!

Amazon Wish Lists

The Amazon Wish List for our group’s foster kittens.

Many rescuers pay out of pocket for veterinary care and food but the costs of raising even the average litter of four healthy kittens is more than many people have, and many rescues have greater needs. Pittsburgh CAT has a number of wish lists that include foods for feeding neo-natal kittens like KMR, and other lists that include the best kitten foods, adult cat foods, food and materials for feral cats, and preferred toys and litter.

Can’t adopt? Foster! Can’t foster? Donate or volunteer.

There are so many ways you can help cats who need homes and care. You may not have room to adopt another cat, but can foster a cat or kitten for a few weeks. If not that, you can volunteer at a shelter or with a rescue, or donate. You do this because you love your cat, and by doing so you help all cats. No matter which of these actions you take, you help to save a life, and make life better for all cats.

  • Adopt one of the cats I’ve posted here, or from any shelter or rescue near you, or from Petfinder, to open up a space for another cat to be rescued and fostered.
  • Offer to foster cats or kittens for a shelter or rescue near you.
  • Volunteer at a shelter or rescue.
  • Find a group of volunteers who work with homeless cats and help them with their efforts.
  • Donate to a shelter or rescue near you.

If you can foster kittens or adults cats to help prepare them for a forever home, please run to your nearest shelter and find a cat who needs you! Anyone can help with this effort at any level, even if all you do is donate to a shelter or rescue so they can help to pay for the food or medications needed for their foster, or the spay/neuter/veterinary care during a clinic.
