Cats for Adoption: Guess Who’s Almost Ready?

black kitten
Smokie knows he’s gorgeous.

Yes, this handsome little kitty is just about ready to move into your home! I know everyone thinks I should keep him, but being able to foster another cat or kitten in need is just as important as giving Smokie a home, and maybe moreso. I’ve always felt that way about fostering. What would I do if another Kennedy came along?

Smokie loves other cats, especially his ninja big brothers and his fur sister Bella who’s taught him all about wrestling. He loves to be cuddled and kissed, and happily purrs and relaxes in your arms until he discovers he needs to go off and conquer the scratching post again.

He has one more stop before graduation. With cats who have a history like him, who have been very frightened of people and places, I like to send them off to another foster home to see how he adjusts to other people and places, and to other animals as well. If he is still a little fearful, I’d rather that happened in a foster home rather than an adoptive home. In a few days he’ll be packing his bags for a sleepover at Debby Nicola’s house to meet Nomad and the Flower Girls and the rest of her cats, and her d-o-g-s! He has met Debby here, so that will help with the transition.

In the meantime, you can fill out your adoption application! He’ll be adopted through Pittsburgh CAT, not through me, and that will also leave time for a home check and all the other requirements for adopting a cat.

So just look into those eyes and be mesmerized!

Amazon Wish Lists

amazon wish list for kittens
The Amazon Wish List for our group’s foster kittens.

Smokie is being fostered through Pittsburgh CAT and donations to this group through these wish lists help him and all the cats in foster.

Many rescuers pay out of pocket for veterinary care and food but the costs of raising even the average litter of four healthy kittens is more than many people have, and many rescues have greater needs, like Auntie. If you can help with just one purchase from the kitten wish list on Amazon.com you’d make some kittens and a rescuer very happy.

We have two wish lists at the moment, the one hosted by Margo which several of you have donated through already and a new one hosted by Tarra that includes items for adult cats.

Can’t adopt? Foster! Can’t foster? Donate or volunteer.

There are so many ways you can help cats who need homes and care. You may not have room to adopt another cat, but can foster a cat or kitten for a few weeks. If not that, you can volunteer at a shelter or with a rescue, or donate. You do this because you love your cat, and by doing so you help all cats. No matter which of these actions you take, you help to save a life, and make life better for all cats.

  • Adopt one of the cats I’ve posted here, or from any shelter or rescue near you, or from Petfinder, to open up a space for another cat to be rescued and fostered.
  • Offer to foster cats or kittens for a shelter or rescue near you.
  • Volunteer at a shelter or rescue.
  • Find a group of volunteers who work with homeless cats and help them with their efforts.
  • Donate to a shelter or rescue near you.

If you can foster kittens or adults cats to help prepare them for a forever home, please run to your nearest shelter and find a cat who needs you! Anyone can help with this effort at any level, even if all you do is donate to a shelter or rescue so they can help to pay for the food or medications needed for their foster, or the spay/neuter/veterinary care during a clinic.

  • I am about to adopt a black cat from my local animal shelter. The cat is in foster care right now, because he is too little. I found him outside my work last Sunday. He should be big enough in a couple of weeks. I am very excited.

    • Thank you for rescuing a little kitty from the great outdoors! And con-cat-ulations on your adoption! I’m glad the shelter could find a foster home to get him up to weight and age for you, and I’m sure he’ll be your little guy forever.
