Cats for Adoption: GiGi and Bonk, Too Friendly For Outdoors

torbie cat
Pretty GiGi!

A friend is working independently on a large colony TNR project at a trailer park west of Pittsburgh along with two smaller projects near her home. These two cats were trapped in one of the colonies near her home and she is fostering while she works out the other projects, but the number of cats and kittens to be spayed and neutered and held overnight at the larger project makes fostering difficult. Finding a home for these two cats would be a great help. She has provided the descriptions below.

GiGi

torbie cat
GiGi is just waiting for pets.

This is GiGi. She was found in Green Garden Plaza in Aliquippa on November 7. She was running around meowing behind Giant Eagle and with some coaxing she allowed me to scruff her and put her in a carrier. GiGi is an incredibly sweet and affectionate cat. She purrs and kneads constantly. She loves her cuddle time. She’s probably just under a year old. She was spayed and she has been given her 1 year rabies vaccine, first distemper vaccine, and tested negative for FIV and FeLV. She has been flea treated with Revolution and de-wormed. She’s healthy and ready to start her new life in a loving home. She gets along with other cats, but is nervous with the dogs. She’s still learning about toys and is still a bit nervous when the scary feather monster comes flying around (the feather toy). She’ll need some help teaching her that toys are fun and it’s great to play. Right now she’s all about snuggles. I’d like to see GiGi in a home with adults or a family with older children. Other cats are fine, mellow dogs would probably be ok. I do require my adopters complete an application, I check references, and then perform a home visit before the adoption is complete. There is a $50.00 adoption fee.

GiGi is currently being fostered in Ambridge, PA, west of Pittsburgh. If you are interested in GiGi please contact Melanie at petrescue @ comcast . net.

Bonk aka Bonkers

black cat
Bonk loves to be loved.
black cat
What a sweet boy!

The truth is, if we didn’t have so many animals already Bonk would be a permanent member of our home. I absolutely love him. He has so much personality. He’s fun, silly, weird. He’s also very affectionate and playful. He gets along with cats, dogs, everyone. He’s so much fun to have around. He constantly has us laughing. He’s obsessed with feet and will often just roll around your feet and play with them or your shoe laces. He’s not picky. He runs around the house trilling and meowing at nothing. He’ll randomly trill at his tail and chase it. Bonk is a young adult, but still very much stuck in kitten hood. Bonk was trapped on August 2nd as part of a TNR project. He was underweight, had scabs all over his body, and hair loss. He was infested with fleas and worms. He was so happy to have someone care for him and he blossomed as he healed. From what we know Bonk was born outside, but had regular contact with people in the neighborhood so he became socialized. Sadly, no one would bring him inside. That’s all behind him now. He’s an incredibly happy cat and would do great in any environment. Bonk is neutered, has his 1 year rabies vaccine, first distemper vaccine, and tested negative for FIV and FeLV. He’s been treated for fleas and de-wormed and he will need to remain on regular flea treatments since he does have a flea allergy. Bonk is ready to start his new adventure with his new family. You can’t help but fall in love with this guy.

Bonk is neutered and tested negative for FIV and feline leukemia. He has his rabies and distemper vaccines. He has been treated for fleas and is de-wormed. Bonk will need to stay consistently on flea treatment to keep him from getting itchy again. He seems to have a bit of flea allergy dermatitis.

If you’d like to give either of these wonderful kitties a new home, Melanie at petrescue @ comcast . net. Located in Ambridge, west of Pittsburgh, PA. Adopters are screened carefully and there is a $50.00 adoption fee.

If you can’t adopt either Fluffy or Bonk, you can still help with that enormous TNR project! The spays and neuters are being done two to four at a time through shelter TNR programs at $35.00 each and you can help her by donating the cost of a spay or neuter–since most of the cats are black, you’ll get a thank you from me if you let me know!

Opportunities to Help Cats

Help Feral Cats This Winter

We not only provide spay and neuter surgery as well as vaccines for the community cats we care for, we also provide emergency veterinary care, food when necessary, and we make shelters for them to live in over the winter. We’ve had a few shelter-making parties with Rubbermaid containers and styrofoam coolers, but we are running short of supplies. Right now we need $188 to buy tape and plastic so we can convert coolers into shelters this weekend and a few weekends in the future, so we can distribute shelters to as many cats as we can. Anything you’d like to donate would be greatly appreciated, though these donations are not tax-deductible. You can PayPal to [email protected].

Amazon Wish Lists

amazon wish list for kittens
The Amazon Wish List for our group’s foster kittens.

I’ve lost count of the number of kittens in foster among our volunteers, and August is usually the month with the highest surrender numbers at Pittsburgh shelters. Part of the mission with TNR is to not return the kittens—once we’ve rescued them we socialize them and put them up for adoptiont.

Many rescuers pay out of pocket for veterinary care and food but the costs of raising even the average litter of four healthy kittens is more than many people have, and many rescues have greater needs, like Auntie. If you can help with just one purchase from the kitten wish list on Amazon.com you’d make some kittens and a rescuer very happy.

We have two wish lists at the moment, the one hosted by Margo which several of you have donated through already and a new one hosted by Tarra that includes items for adult cats.

Can’t adopt? Foster! Can’t foster? Donate or volunteer.

There are so many ways you can help cats who need homes and care. You may not have room to adopt another cat, but can foster a cat or kitten for a few weeks. If not that, you can volunteer at a shelter or with a rescue, or donate. You do this because you love your cat, and by doing so you help all cats. No matter which of these actions you take, you help to save a life, and make life better for all cats.

  • Adopt one of the cats I’ve posted here, or from any shelter or rescue near you, or from Petfinder, to open up a space for another cat to be rescued and fostered.
  • Offer to foster cats or kittens for a shelter or rescue near you.
  • Volunteer at a shelter or rescue.
  • Find a group of volunteers who work with homeless cats and help them with their efforts.
  • Donate to a shelter or rescue near you.

If you can foster kittens or adults cats to help prepare them for a forever home, please run to your nearest shelter and find a cat who needs you! Anyone can help with this effort at any level, even if all you do is donate to a shelter or rescue so they can help to pay for the food or medications needed for their foster, or the spay/neuter/veterinary care during a clinic.
