Cats for Adoption: Cassidy, Rescued and Ready

Cassidy in a carrier on his way to the clinic.

Feeding the cats in her outdoor colony, a caretaker in a fairly isolated rural area saw a new cat joining the group. She noticed he was injured and for three days tried to catch him to get a better look. Unsuccessful, she called a friend who works with a TNR group who came with a humane trap, and eventually they caught him.

Both of his front legs were injured, but one was really horrible, mangled in a way that was likely from being caught in a leg-hold trap. The extent of his injuries and what might be done for him wasn’t clear, but he was taken to the low-cost clinic this past Saturday for a workup.

It turns out he’s between three and four years old, and wasn’t neutered, and after playing hard to get was a totally sweet and trusting cat, “not skittish at all, looking like he felt completely safe and knew people were helping him.”

And that was pretty shocking considering the extent of his injuries and what he’d likely been through. His left front leg was so badly injured it had to be removed. Add to that our recent frigid weather—he would have been outdoors, possibly caught in a trap, and definitely with an injured leg, when for days temperatures were below zero at night and in the single digits during the day, with howling winds and snow and ice. How long he’d been trapped or how far he’d walked with two injured front legs we’ll never know, but this was a cat who deserved all that could be done for him.

“Iz pretty relaxed!”

“He is a fighter and a major survivor,” said Samantha Ginsburg who volunteers with Kopy Kat Sanctuary (KKS) in Westmoreland County, east of Pittsburgh, the organization which is currently fostering him after his surgery. “It must have hurt so badly getting out then God knows how long he was out there.”

His foster person, Sue, manages the sanctuary and all the cats in it and told Samantha about how he’s doing after surgery. “She said he is super duper sweet. He clearly lived inside at some point and was owned,” said Samantha. “He loves to cuddle and does not appear to be scared of anything…noise, people, cats…she is in LOVE!!” He used the litter box with no problem, even with a recently amputated front leg.

Despite how much Sue loves him, Cassidy will need a home, and very soon. The sanctuary is full to overflowing and the “staff” consists of about five people. The medical costs for a cat with such extreme injuries is difficult for a small non-profit group that relies entirely on donations.

So we are starting to look for a home for this loving little tuxedo kitty now in hopes someone will fall in love with him and be ready to take him in two to three weeks when he’s recovered from his surgery. He was flea treated, dewormed, vaccinated, FIV/FeLV tested so that when the time comes, he’ll be ready to move right in.

Kopy Kat Sanctuary

Kopy Kat Sanctuary is located in Delmont, PA, east of Pittsburgh. They are “a group of cat-loving women trying to improve the lives of a few felines” in their own homes and out of their own pockets as well as helping those in need with low-cost spay and neuter to help reduce the populations of homeless cats. Opportunities to Help Cats

Amazon Wish Lists

The Amazon Wish List for our group’s foster kittens.

I’ve lost count of the number of kittens in foster among our volunteers, and August is usually the month with the highest surrender numbers at Pittsburgh shelters. Part of the mission with TNR is to not return the kittens—once we’ve rescued them we socialize them and put them up for adoptiont.

Many rescuers pay out of pocket for veterinary care and food but the costs of raising even the average litter of four healthy kittens is more than many people have, and many rescues have greater needs, like Auntie. If you can help with just one purchase from the kitten wish list on Amazon.com you’d make some kittens and a rescuer very happy.

We have two wish lists at the moment, the one hosted by Margo which several of you have donated through already and a new one hosted by Tarra that includes items for adult cats.

Help Feral Cats This Winter

We not only provide spay and neuter surgery as well as vaccines for the community cats we care for, we also provide emergency veterinary care, food when necessary, and we make shelters for them to live in over the winter. We’ve had a few shelter-making parties with Rubbermaid containers and styrofoam coolers, but we are running short of supplies. Right now we need $188 to buy tape and plastic so we can convert coolers into shelters this weekend and a few weekends in the future, so we can distribute shelters to as many cats as we can. Anything you’d like to donate would be greatly appreciated, though these donations are not tax-deductible. You can PayPal to [email protected].

Can’t adopt? Foster! Can’t foster? Donate or volunteer.

There are so many ways you can help cats who need homes and care. You may not have room to adopt another cat, but can foster a cat or kitten for a few weeks. If not that, you can volunteer at a shelter or with a rescue, or donate. You do this because you love your cat, and by doing so you help all cats. No matter which of these actions you take, you help to save a life, and make life better for all cats.

  • Adopt one of the cats I’ve posted here, or from any shelter or rescue near you, or from Petfinder, to open up a space for another cat to be rescued and fostered.
  • Offer to foster cats or kittens for a shelter or rescue near you.
  • Volunteer at a shelter or rescue.
  • Find a group of volunteers who work with homeless cats and help them with their efforts.
  • Donate to a shelter or rescue near you.

If you can foster kittens or adults cats to help prepare them for a forever home, please run to your nearest shelter and find a cat who needs you! Anyone can help with this effort at any level, even if all you do is donate to a shelter or rescue so they can help to pay for the food or medications needed for their foster, or the spay/neuter/veterinary care during a clinic.
