Cats for Adoption: Hamlet Has Decided “To Be”

Hamlet has decided "to be".
Hamlet has decided “to be”.

This morning when I went into the bathroom and greeted Hamlet and Ophelia, for the first time ever since he’s been here, Hamlet mewed at me. I’m still kind of surprised—I’ve never heard so much as a chirp out of him and only recently barely detected a purr. But just recently he’s really pushing his boundaries, walking in front of me and asking for pets, rolling around so I can pet him better, not running from me most of the time, and even appearing when visitors are here. I’m being very careful. I don’t want him to feel any trauma about anything so we don’t have any setbacks, but this was all his own doing.

So now, we can start looking for a home for Hamlet as well as Ophelia. He will need a little gentle handling at first, but I think he will be fine with patience and time.

He is very playful, and very intelligent. He has walked a long journey from one of the first times he appeared outside of the bathroom and let me take his photo, but even then he found a toy to play with. Look at those frightened eyes. I felt bad for staring at him long enough to get this photo, so I didn’t get a very good one.

Now he’s a really into the whole camera thing, because it’s followed by pets. He really likes his pets, scratches around the neck, strokes all the way down his back, and, of all things, belly rubs. And he never seems to get overstimulated by petting him for any length of time, which would be typical, he just enjoys it all.

You mean like this?
You mean like this?

Above, without his winter coat, he’s distinctly slender and velvety. I like him both ways. He still has a huge fluffy tail though, and it’s almost as big around as he is.

And don’t forget those big round eyes, and he knows how to use a basket to his advantage!

I'm sure no one will see you in the yellow basket, Hamlet.

None of this would have been possible for Hamlet if not for the Homeless Cat Management Team whose volunteers trapped Hamlet and Ophelia and gave them a chance to be socialized rather than suffer on the streets or be euthanized because there was no home for them. And for Pittsburgh C.A.T. who supported me in the time it took to socialize the two of them.

How to adopt Hamlet!

All cats are available through Pittsburgh C.A.T. They are spayed or neutered, up to date on all vaccines, test negative for FIV/FeLV unless otherwise noted, and may be shy at first but are completely socialized to living with humans. Pittsburgh C.A.T. has an adoption application and requires veterinary checks on records of current/prior pets of all species and landlord checks if the applicant rents. If you are interested in any of these cats or other cats from Pittsburgh C.A.T., it all begins with the adoption application: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/1ktXTAsBbRRxQEfjGJIcQIpITf3UsGwL6FjTprul-adc/viewform

Can’t adopt? Foster! Can’t foster? Donate or volunteer.

There are so many ways you can help cats who need homes and care. You may not have room to adopt another cat, but can foster a cat or kitten for a few weeks. If not that, you can volunteer at a shelter or with a rescue, or donate. You do this because you love your cat, and by doing so you help all cats. No matter which of these actions you take, you help to save a life, and make life better for all cats.

  • Adopt one of the cats I’ve posted here, or from any shelter or rescue near you, or from Petfinder, to open up a space for another cat to be rescued and fostered.
  • Offer to foster cats or kittens for a shelter or rescue near you.
  • Volunteer at a shelter or rescue.
  • Find a group of volunteers who work with homeless cats and help them with their efforts.
  • Donate to a shelter or rescue near you.

If you can foster kittens or adults cats to help prepare them for a forever home, please run to your nearest shelter and find a cat who needs you! Anyone can help with this effort at any level, even if all you do is donate to a shelter or rescue so they can help to pay for the food or medications needed for their foster, or the spay/neuter/veterinary care during a clinic.

Oh, gosh, what a handsome cat! Here’s hoping that Hamlet gets all the good things a fuzzy creature can!

He’ll still need an understanding human, but I hope we can find one Gale.

He’s extremely handsome Momma Kat, and I think he’s finally starting to use it.

Will wonders never cease? Your love + patience work miracles, Bernadette. (And your family of kits gives good guidance, too!)

Time and patience do work wonders Meg, and he and Ophelia have finally decided to trust the others’ opinions and are approaching a few for acceptance.

He still doubts his decision now and then Tabbies, but he’s enjoying “being” most of the time!
