Cat for Adoption: Lumpy, as Soon as He Loses Weight!

Lumpy is indeed a big boy, but before he goes up for adoption he’s going to undergo a spa treatment for several months with a new diet, fun activities and weekly weigh-ins.

But first, when we see obese kitties show up at shelters and rescues we have to wonder how it happened. At rescue Lumpy weighed 30 pounds. 30 pounds! The normal weight for an adult cat is between 8 and 10 pounds, and some genetics can add more weight to a cat. Three times the normal weight for his species is like the average 150-pound human weighing 450 pounds, and we can imagine not only what that looks like on a human, but what it does to a human’s body is about the same that obesity does to a cat’s body”: heart disease, diabetes, joint pain, shortness of breath, increased strain on organs and other conditions related to them.

Lumpy lived for seven years in a garage with no toys or play, no way to get outdoors to exercise, and getting an unlimited amount of low-quality dry and canned food. He could barely move when he was rescued. The weight and inactivity were damaging his body and would shorten his life, and he would not be put up for adoption until he had lost some of the weight in a carefully planned program of diet and exercise.

Now he gets regular affection, attention and grooming, and he’s even taken a swat at a few toys since he came in at the beginning of February. In his first week, just from the change in his circumstances, he lost a whole pound. That’s a bit much, but as with humans, beginning a diet often results in an unexpected loss of weight at the beginning that slows and reduces over time. So far he’s lost 2.5 pounds.

Support Lumpy’s weight loss!

Lumpy will require a lot of medical care to ensure he is healthy as he loses weight so Pittsburgh C.A.T. is working on ways to raise funds to support Lumpy’s weight loss.

  • Each Thursday Lumpy has a weigh-in and Pittsburgh C.A.T. provides an educational fact and some information about weight loss in cats and invites everyone to guess Lumpy’s weight. Everyone is invited to donate for each pound he loses after each weigh-in.
  • Pittsburgh C.A.T. is selling 3×3 magnets with Lumpy’s picture. If you donate $10 or more, you get a magnet for free. If you would like to just purchase one, they are $3 each.

You can follow Lumpy on www.facebook.com/pittsburghcat. The PayPal address to donate is [email protected] you can private message them for a mailing address for checks.

Amazon Wish Lists

The Amazon Wish List for our group’s foster kittens.

Many rescuers pay out of pocket for veterinary care and food but the costs of raising even the average litter of four healthy kittens is more than many people have, and many rescues have greater needs. Pittsburgh CAT has a number of wish lists that include foods for feeding neo-natal kittens like KMR, and other lists that include the best kitten foods, adult cat foods, food and materials for feral cats, and preferred toys and litter.

Can’t adopt? Foster! Can’t foster? Donate or volunteer.

There are so many ways you can help cats who need homes and care. You may not have room to adopt another cat, but can foster a cat or kitten for a few weeks. If not that, you can volunteer at a shelter or with a rescue, or donate. You do this because you love your cat, and by doing so you help all cats. No matter which of these actions you take, you help to save a life, and make life better for all cats.

  • Adopt one of the cats I’ve posted here, or from any shelter or rescue near you, or from Petfinder, to open up a space for another cat to be rescued and fostered.
  • Offer to foster cats or kittens for a shelter or rescue near you.
  • Volunteer at a shelter or rescue.
  • Find a group of volunteers who work with homeless cats and help them with their efforts.
  • Donate to a shelter or rescue near you.

If you can foster kittens or adults cats to help prepare them for a forever home, please run to your nearest shelter and find a cat who needs you! Anyone can help with this effort at any level, even if all you do is donate to a shelter or rescue so they can help to pay for the food or medications needed for their foster, or the spay/neuter/veterinary care during a clinic.

Poor Lumpy, how sad he spent 7 years in a garage. I am glad he was rescued.

    • Ellen, it always makes me think of others out there in the same situation. I guess it’s better than being abandoned, just glad we got him.
