Coloring really is fun, even for adults, and no doubt creating coloring books is fun for artists too, at least judging by the popularity of adult coloring books and the number of artists creating them. The ones featuring cats catch my eye, of course, and when Artist BZTAT announced she was creating a coloring book, knowing her art, I could just picture the style and knew it would be fun.
Whether the subject is pet portraits or landscapes or symbolic art, BZTAT’s style is modern but whimsical, full of shapes that weave the subject with the background through simplified shadows and highlights and shapes, and always lots of color. The book contains 25 drawings that she created specifically for this coloring book, each including a cat, and a few including dogs too, but though they are line art intended to be colored into, they are not the simple drawings of children’s coloring book. The familiarly shaped and patterned cats are placed against a patterned background and nearly each one has a detailed border to give adults a challenge. The resulting art will keep you focused as you color, no matter which coloring medium you choose.
I chose markers to color this drawing. Looking at the subject I wanted bright, flat colors with no shading. Colorists often use colored pencils too.
BZTAT’s medium is typically acrylic paints on prepared panels especially for her pet portraits, which are often larger than life.
The book is 8.5″ x 11″, and the images are about 6.25″ x 9″. They are printed on one side only of white cover stock and coil-bound. Individual pages are perforated near the coils for easy removal.
BZTAT is artist Vicki Boatright who holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree and a Master of Arts Degree in the visual arts from Marshall University in Huntington, WV and a Masters Degree in counseling from Marshall University. BZTAT Studios is located in the trendy Canton, OH arts district at Second April Galerie. BZTAT also has a gallery at Embrace Pet Insurance in Beachwood, OH. BZTAT lives with five incredible cats, all rescues, and has been helping with TNR in her community in Canton, OH. “BZTAT’ was the name of a cat who was an inspiration for 19 years. For the giveaway
- Giveaway is for one Color Me Cats coloring book.
- Giveaway will start today, November 28, 2015, and be finished at midnight PST on Saturday, December 5, 2015 (extended one day, I have an art event on Saturday and won’t be able to pull and announce the winner until Sunday).

All comments to this post are eligible—if you are not interested but want to comment anyway, please add that to your comment, but if you are visiting this post in a reader or on Facebook, please come to the post on my blog to comment—I don’t always see comments on other social networks. It’s much appreciated if you share on social media, but, as always, this is difficult for me to track so it doesn’t increase your chances.
- I will email the winner when chosen by printing out all the comments, tossing them in to a container and having someone else pull the winner, possibly even one of my cats. If the winner does not reply in 48 hours, I will choose another.
Good luck, and happy coloring! Make sure you’ve got a kitty to supervise you though. Simon did very well for his first time as studio supervisor!
NOTE: I purchased this book from BZTAT Studios and chose to review it on my own, printing out a file of one of the images from the book that BZTAT sent to me so I could leave the book intact for the giveaway. I was not compensated in any way for this review.
