BCHS Teams With Other Local Rescues to Shelter Hurricane Harvey Pets
Aliquippa, PA September 4, 2017 – The Beaver County Humane Society (BCHS) is among those ramping up to help in Hurricane Harvey rescue efforts. Susan Salyards, BCHS Executive Director, said the non-profit group is partnering with Pittsburgh Aviation Animal Rescue Team (PAART) and other local shelters to take in pets in need from the San Antonio Humane Society (SAHS).
PAART volunteers arrived at SAHS on Sunday morning, September 3, 2017, to deliver thousands of pounds of supplies and load upwards of 42 pets onto PAART’s rescue trailer. The transport is expected to arrive in Pittsburgh on Monday evening.
BCHS will be receiving 10 dogs, including a litter of five dachshund puppies.
“The goal,” Salyards said, “is to clear out homeless shelter animals at the San Antonio Humane Society and leave behind empty space that can now be occupied by hurricane victim animals. That way, lost pets can be provided with shelter and care until their families can eventually be reunited with their pets.”
Salyards urges local animal lovers to adopt dogs currently in the Aliquippa shelter to make way for dogs from Texas, or to consider signing up to be a foster home to help us care for the animals already in our shelter or, if needed, those coming from the Gulf Coast. It is easy to sign up at https://beavercountyhumanesociety.org/foster-services. “We will continue to need fosters for the pets in our care as we collaborate with PAART and other local groups to bring in more animals.”
The dogs that are being transferred to BCHS will be evaluated upon their arrival by the BCHS medical team and will receive all the care they need. BCHS hopes to place them up for adoption in the coming days and weeks. “By adopting a pet from BCHS, you will save that animal’s life as well as open up space for another homeless pet in need,” said Salyards. While Salyards does not want to detract from those seeking to donate to relief operations in Texas, she did say monetary donations to BCHS would enable the local nonprofit to offset the costs to shelter, provide medical care for, and care for the pet evacuees from Texas.

Since 1950 the Beaver County Humane Society has been committed to helping animals in the Beaver County Area. Sixty-seven years later, more than 4,000 animals receive comfort and care each year.
