It's a free for all!
It’s a free for all!

Nine years ago today, this is what the Curious Quartet looked like, just about one month old, and they’ve totally trashed their playroom once again. Last year I just happened to be flipping through pictures in the folder for August 31, 2007 and thought I should share the cuteness of a day with black kittens and their mom.

You’re not going to show that one where they’re nursing while I eat, are you?

Well, Mimi, I felt really bad for you not ever being able to get a bite to eat without kittens nursing from you.

That’s all well and good, but I look horrible. And that one where I look like a beached whale and I’m showing every nipple on my belly?

Mimi, you are one cat who no one could ever describe as a beached whale. You’re just having a rest while your kittens admire you.

Do you have to?

In the interests of total disclosure, yes.

I’m so embarrassed.

Mimi, everyone knows that’s not what you look like now. Everyone will be glad you’re not having babies anymore! And you are beautiful!

Daily Photo: Posing on the Rocker
Mimi on the rocker.
Mimi on the rocker.

Mimi and I are still exploring this “rocker” photo opportunity in the back yard. We’re not sure what we want, but we find new wisdom each time. I’d placed it there when cleaning off my deck in May this year and enjoyed watching the foliage grow up around it, and now watching it ebb as the angle of the sun lowers. Back in May Mimi read my mind as I looked at the chair among the forget-me-nots and buttercups and thought how nice she would look there, and proceeded to walk over to the rocker and hop up and model for me.

This time she purposely ignored me as I watched the sun play on the chair, and I had to pick her up and put her there, producing this expression.

How dare you!
How dare you!

But Mimi loves to model and was soon up to her magic. Soon she was stepping around and looking at the light and doing fancy things with her tail.

Then she assumed a sober posture similar to the one at the top.

Looking sweet.

Then she left!

Done.
Done.

Guess I was done anyway!

“I used to own this neighborhood.” Mimi sits inside the gate, happy enough with her life inside the back yard and inside the house, but a shadow of herself will always be on the outside.

Mimi and her shadow.

A Sunday Nap, 2014
two black cats sleeping
The boys have a nice nap all Sunday afternoon.

Giuseppe and Bean spread themselves on the top of the wardrobe where a cool, if damp, breeze came in the window. They practiced holding postures for longer and longer periods, only turning about four times all day. It was a good Sunday nap.

They are filtered just a little in Photoshop with “poster edges”, one good way I’ve found to make the edges of black cats more distinct!

Exercise Biker Chicks, 2013

Exercise Biker Chicks

Don’t mess with them! They dress in black and they are baaad girls. Look at those expressions!

Also, don’t mind the chaos in my basement. It’s been flooding a bit when it rains the past year so everything is everywhere, and the floor paint is peeling. But we really enjoy our mornings down there nonetheless, me doing laundry, we chicks riding our bike and everyone watching out the door into the back yard. When it’s too cold to open, I attach a shelf to the inside of the door, right below the window so they can still watch outside, and I put a bird feeder where we can all watch it.

Warm Sunny Concrete, 2013

Ahhhhh……

Mewsette enjoys the warm scratchiness of sun-drenched concrete, having a really good all-over roll. She really, really wants to be an outdoor girl, even before her Mama Mimi began joining me. Three years ago she would come to the door and cry and cry, so I would open it wide and she would run back into the basement. We have progressed from that to where I can actually close the door behind her and she explores beyond this block of concrete. She will now graduate to her own collar, and possibly a leash and harness as well.

After a really good roll, she got up and rubbed herself all over my rusty old rocker, rubbed herself really well, almost doing a somersault in the process!

Have to rub all of myself on this chair.

She has no interest in any other door, only the basement door. She was bolder here than usual, possibly because Mimi was out there to keep her company, and Mimi wasn’t running off into the corners of the yard as usual, but showed Mewsette just a few really neat things as the girls spent some time together. Then Mewsette had to return to the comfort of the concrete pad…aaahhhhhh.

Even better the second time around.

Today’s Selection, 2013
three black cats on cabinet
Today’s selection of kitchen cats.

I do have cat beds in the house, but they generally prefer places like the kitchen cabinet and table. I know they want to be able to see all the action so they prefer to be in the center of the room on top of something. I have not yet broken down and put a cat bed on my kitchen table. However, if I did, for sure they would find some other place to sleep.

Mimi, on the left with the green collar, loves to curl up with her big soft children and Mewsette, on the right, likes to look out the door. Giuseppe, in the middle, well, I think he needs to learn how to relax, I think I see some stress in his tail.

And I thought the kitchen was for, like, food preparation.

Morning Reflections, 2012

Bean in morning contemplation.

Just a little sweetness at my desk in the morning, Bean sleeping pressed up against his sister, the sunlight reflected up onto his face, a perfect little triangle.

Don’t know where that little white hair in his forehead came from, I keep trying to brush it away!
